Phil Hughes - RIP
BATSMAN Phil Hughes arrived at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital in an induced coma at 3:30pm and is currently in surgery after being struck on the head by a bouncer at the SCG earlier this afternoon while playing for South Australia in today’s Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the SCG.

A hospital spokesman confirmed Hughes had suffered a head injury and that Hughes was rushed into surgery after scans were taken.

There were distressing scenes at the SCG, as the Test hopeful and former Australian batsman was knocked out by a bouncer and stretchered from the ground at 2:23pm.

Ambulance officials confirmed he was in a critical condition.

At least three ambulances and a helicopter were on hand to treat the 25-year-old and transport him to St Vincent’s Hospital. He was reportedly breathing with some assistance when he left the ground.

Australian captain Michael Clarke was one of the first people to arrive at the hospital and is comforting Hughes’s sister and mother Virginia who were at the SCG today.

The opposing Blues players rushed in to help their former teammate and called for medical help from the dressing rooms when Hughes was felled by a bouncer by Sean Abbott when trying to execute a pull shot.

Doctors attempted to resuscitate the South Australia batsman on the wicket and stopped the medical van on the boundary to continue treatment soon after.

Dreadful thing to have happen

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
I just heard about this on the radio.

It has long puzzled me how bowlers can make it their life's work trying to smash batsmen in the head, and there is shock when they actually succeed.

Hopefully two things will come out of this.

1 - Phil Hughes will make a full recovery.

2 - This tactic will be outlawed.

Just watched it on the evening news, dreadful stuff.

Shocking news, agree with Antly, no place in the sport for bowlers aiming for people's heads.

I dont think they are trying to hit them on the head and kill them, god forbid this is the case here.

Apparently no ambulance at the ground and took an age to get there. Im sure this isnt the case here but thats a bit disgraceful if true.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
You can't outlaw short pitched bowling. The game becomes very easy if every batsman can just rock on to the front foot knowing there'll be nothing anywhere else.

As sad as this is, and I wish him well, it's a legitimate tactic that's been used for more than 100 years.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
Sean Abbott is a fast medium all rounder so it's more a case of misjudging a short ball when trying to pull it rather than anything intimidatory or trying to hit him.
As mentioned on the other thread with the Pakistan batsman getting a fractured skull against NZ it's maybe a case to see if helmets are sacrificing complete safety for comfort.

Just a terrible accident & hope we have a positive outcome.
C'mon Phil!

Out of surgery & in intensive care unit according to cricinfo. Might not know results for 24-48 hrs.
Hit at 2.23 & treated on field by SCG doctor and resuscitated.
Ambulance arrived at 2.50

You can't ban short pitched bowling, it's part and parcel of the game. You could top edge a sweep into your face off a spinner and do yourself some serious damage. Perhaps the health and safety squad will be calling for tennis balls to be introduced...

A cricket ball is a potential lethal weapon, anybody who has ever picked a ball up knows that and anybody who has ever played the game at whatever level knows that there is a miniscule risk of this type of thing happening. Let's all hope the lad is back at the crease one day.

I agree with the comments about helmet design, some of them do seem to be a bit shit at their job of protecting your bonce.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
Whatever the intentions were with this particular delivery the fact remains that fast bowlers do attempt to send the ball through the space occupied by the batsman's head. They make it the responsibility of the batsman to avoid injury.

Anything above the shoulders should be a no ball.
I realise it would be a significant change to the game, but does someone have to die for this change to be made?

What next then Ronald?

Batsmen aren't allowed to hit a 6 in case someone in the crowd gets hit?

Wow. Very nasty.

Struck on the helmet? Scary that it can still do so much damage.

You're just being silly now, Jonah.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
If you're gonna outlaw bouncers in sport because of a few injuries then where do you stop? Ban boxing because someone got punched in the head once? No more fishing because a few people drowned? Ban rugby because of a few injuries?

Sorry Ronald but you sound like a bit of an idiot.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
They have modified the rules of rugby for the sake of player safety, so we can scrub that one off your "argument" right there.
Lots of boxers end up much the worse for wear, so there's an argument for banning it. Ever heard of Muhammad Ali? He's not quite his old self these days.

As for being an idiot, I suggest you lack self awareness.
I have an opinion. I suspect Phil Hughes family may not disagree with me right now.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
I don't imagine anyone who loves the game, or has played it to any sort of standard, will agree you with here, Ronald SON.

I reckon a shitload of people who have nothing better to do will agree with you though.

Oh that kind of bouncer?
I thought he got clumped in a club.

Sad news, hope he pulls through!

Marston Hammer 10:40 Tue Nov 25
Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
I highly doubt we're gonna hear calls from Phil Hughes family, or even Hughes himself, to outlaw bouncers.

stewie

I fully expected to have very little support for my suggestion, but this is a forum which invites people to express opinions. So deal with it.

I have been of this opinion for quite some time, and this incident just serves to strengthen it.

Re: Phil Hughes in critical condition after being hit by bouncer
To be honest, ever since ALL batsmen started wearing helmets, and have no experience of playing without them, I think this has been bound to happen.

Batsmen used to be much better at getting out of the way of bouncers and being very selective with which ones they had a go at.

They now seem to go after every ball, Ron could be onto something in 20/20 or one day cricket, but I wouldn't ban the bouncer in Test (real) Cricket
